The Amboni Caves in Tanga Tanzania are the most extensive limestone caves in East Africa. The site is located 8kms north of Tanga. The caves were formed about 150 million years ago during the Jurassic age. The area covers 234 km². The area was under water some 20 million years ago and there are about ten caves altogether and only one is used for tourists. It is not known when the caves were discovered but, reports indicate the ethnic groups of people such as Segeju, Sambaa, Bondei, Digo and others, used it for prayer and rituals. The caves have been handled to the Department of Antiquities as one of Historical sites.
